CHARACTER FACTS
» Name: Lan Fan
» Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist
» Reference: Wiki Link
» Canon Point: Post series, after chapter 108.
» Gender: Female
» Age: 18 (No official age given. Is estimated to be the same age as Ling; 15 during series. Ling is 18 in the epilogue.)
CHARACTER INTERPRETATION
» Appearance: Under her mask, Lan Fan is a rather attractive young woman of average height, standing about 5’ 6”. She has chestnut brown eyes and long black hair that is usually up in a bun but when it is down it comes past her shoulders. Her build is lean and muscular due to her being very athletic. But also she is surprisingly curvaceous under her bindings. She lost her left arm and is now replaced by an automail arm. There is some scaring around the shoulder region where she cut it off. Automail is prosthetic limb that is connected to the person’s nerves and functions like a normal limb. Lan Fan’s automail has some added features, including a retractable sword blade at the elbow joint.
Lan Fan is not the most girly girl. Her usual attire is her black Xingese guard uniform. The main body has a chest plate with shoulder guards and a hood. On her arms she had protectors with spikes on the knuckles. Lan Fan’s most notable article would be her red, white, and black mask. You rarely ever see her without it on.
» Suitability: Going to fill this part out even though Lan Fan has been aged to 18 since in the series you see her spend the great majority of her at the age of 15.
The first thing that needs to be understood is where she comes from. Lan Fan comes from the Empire of Xing which is a monarchy. There is a strict social caste system formed by 50 hereditary clans. Lan Fan’s clan has a long standing tradition to become retainers to the Yao Clan. At a young age she was exposed to environment being instilled with a strong sense of duty. The most extreme example of her performing her duties to protect the Yao prince is her cutting off her own arm to allow them to escape Wrath. This is something you wouldn’t see your average fifteen year old do. She is capable to making tough decisions, even if it meant having sex to survive.
» Orientation: In both the manga and anime there isn’t really much canon evidence to go on since it isn’t that kind of story. However, from what they do provide, it can be read into that her above and beyond devotion to Ling is more than professional. In the last ark Hohenheim even points out that he has noticed how special Ling means to her. Going by this, Lan Fan is heterosexual. On the Kinsey she would be a 1.
» Personality: At first glance Lan Fan can appear to be very stand-offish. When she first appears Lan Fan is this silent looming presence keeping an ever watchful eye on her charge. Protecting the Yao Clan has been something her family has done for generations. It is a duty that she takes deadly serious. Lan Fan has to be able to fight off assassins at a moment’s notice. Her training involved being able to fight in complete darkness, aided in being able to sense what is called ‘The Dragon’s pulse’. This is more than just a family tradition; in her hands she is protecting someone who could be one day the future emperor of Xing. There are many who want to seek harm to her charge. In most cases she prefers to avoid unnecessary personal contact. Being perceived as an enigma is good for her job. That is to say that Lan Fan does have the bite to back it up. She is incredibly well disciplined keeping a level head most of the time. However, she does have a quick temper when it comes to her prince which at times can get her into trouble. During her fight with Ed she clearly had the upper hand despite Ed’s ability to do alchemy. When he insulted Ling it triggered something making her fighting style wild and sloppy. Most of the time, she has an heir of calm confidence when she fights not even blinking when she takes on harder opponents, like the homunculi.
One of her biggest mistakes was letting her confidence blind her and Pride caught her off guard, critically wounding her. You see how resolute she is to her devotion to Ling when they were on the run trying to escape. She lays her life on the line and cuts off her useless wounded arm without a second thought. When she sets her mind to something she follows through with earnest determination. Her slip up with Pride is one of her biggest regrets, her failure. Lan Fan will always bare the scars as a constant reminder of almost losing her ward. When she is lying in the Dr. Knox’s bed you can see her mask crack and the guilt shows through. As she is lying there in Dr. Knox’s bed she grieves over the lost of her am and her inability to stay by Ling’s side. While she is unable to leave Ed has the hard task of informing while under his care Ling had been possessed by the homunculus Greed, but she holds out hope cause Ling’s resistance is still inside, fighting. She doesn’t blame the brothers for not being able to protect him but instead shoulders all the responsibility. Using that pain to fuel her resolve to never let something like that ever happen again, makes her stronger, learn from her mistakes, she leaves with reluctance for a short while to recover and to find an automail mechanic to replace her lost arm. Afterwards, she fully intends to come back to return to Ling’s side and her duties.
Other than her serious business side there is a whole other side to her, a softer side. Underneath that mask is actually a very shy, sweet girl. It is most prominent when she is unmasked around Ling. You can see her tugging on her scarf to hide her face when she speaks to him. On several occasions you can see Lan Fan get flustered, even going a bit red. Like when Ling makes Lan Fan thank the Elric brothers for fixing her mask even though she didn’t want to. Even though she tries to hide it, under it all she is still a girl with feelings. After losing her arm, some of her brashness towards Ed’s group falls away and shows them gratitude and respect in the way they found her medical help. During her recovery time the one who she is most grateful for is her physician, Dr. Knox. Having her in his home puts in at great risk but treated her injury and watched over her with absolutely no gain for himself. Dr. Knox’s recounts his experience during and after the Ishvalan civil war during her stay and it strikes a chord with her. That situation reminds her of what was currently happening in her own country. His words, ‘This is one old geezer who doesn’t like the sight of children trying to kill each other’ are etched into the back of her mind. It has such a profound effect on her that with the loss of her grandfather during the Promised Day Lan Fan does something that she wouldn’t normally do. To Ling’s completely surprise she makes a request of him. When he becomes Emperor she asks that he doesn’t punish the other 49 clans, tired of all the fighting and death.
The two most important people in Lan Fan’s life besides Dr. Knox have to be her grandfather and Ling. When you see her interacting with her grandfather, it is very formal and respectful, at least when they are on a mission. It is clear that she deeply loves her grandfather and values his opinion of her. When she lost her arm he was very disappointed in her and even stuck her but he was only concerned about his granddaughter. Next time she could lose more than her arm. During the Promise Day Pride, the man who took her arm, kills Fu. When she confronts him, instead of taking revenge on him like no doubt her earlier self would have in a heartbeat, she asks him about anyone he loved. Pride calls her a fool as she wasted time with pointless questions and he succumbs to his injuries.
Though, without a doubt the most important person in her life is Ling. Pretty much her whole life revolves around him. She will do anything he asks of her, unless it’s something that would bring him harm. As said many times before, protecting the Yao Clan has always been a part of her clan’s tradition. Although that is true, her steadfast loyalty to him seems to be a little more than a solely professional level. When she is unmasked around him she is visibly uncomfortable, hiding her face anyway she can. Even Hohenheim notices how important Ling is to her and when they were alone makes a comment to her about it. Though she would never tell him how she feels if she harbored less than honorable intentions towards him. She is fully aware of his duty as emperor and what is expected of him. As a way to make sure the 50 clans stay unified, he is expected to take one clan’s daughter as a concubine to his children. That way they are connected by blood. It wouldn’t be her place to burden him with her feelings.
